Grid extension too expensive? When a battery is cheaper

Is your site far from the grid? What a grid extension costs in Flanders and Wallonia in 2026, the costs the quote leaves out, and when a battery beats the cable.

Grid extension too expensive? When a battery is cheaper

A battery beats the cable in three cases. The extension is long, you need more than 56 kVA, or the wait costs more than you can afford. Then there are two routes. Ask for a smaller connection and let a semi-off-grid system with solar panels and a battery carry the peaks. Or skip the cable and go fully off-grid. Is your site only a little beyond the free 100 metres, and do you use most power at night or in winter? Then the extension is usually the better buy.

The site is ready: a barn, a workshop, a stable or a new hall. Only the power is missing. The nearest cable runs along a road a few hundred metres away, and the grid operator's quote lands on your desk. On a Belgian building forum, a rural owner with a 200-metre line across farmland was quoted about 6,700 euro excl. VAT to put 100 metres underground (2021). The replies were short: you ask for it, so you pay for it.

What the quote does not show is the rest of the bill. The trench and the cable on your own land beyond 25 metres are yours. So is the study, and above 56 kVA every metre costs four times as much. While you wait, the building earns nothing, or a generator runs day and night on fuel you have to haul in.

Some owners stopped waiting. A stable and a cottage in Kasterlee lay very far from the grid. The owner did not want to start a generator for every stay. An off-grid system of 5 kVA and 16 kWh now covers the whole year. In Turnhout, one connection for a hobby room in a shared garage would have meant breaking open the driveway. An off-grid system of 3 kVA and 15.4 kWh made that unnecessary.

What does a grid extension cost in Flanders in 2026?

A standard new low-voltage connection from Fluvius costs 749.23 euro excl. VAT up to 56 kVA, and 1,008.02 euro above it. If there is no grid cable in your street, Fluvius extends it, and the first 100 metres on public land are free. Fluvius chooses the route. Every metre beyond that is charged, at a rate that depends on the power you ask for.

Item (Fluvius, 2026, excl. VAT) Up to 56 kVA Above 56 kVA
New low-voltage connection749.23 euro1,008.02 euro

Grid extension beyond 100 m23.05 euro per metre91.51 euro per metre

Extra power right above 17.3 kVA27.59 euro per kVA27.59 euro per kVA

Take a farm 400 metres from the nearest grid cable. The first 100 metres are free, so 300 metres are charged. That is about 6,915 euro up to 56 kVA, or 27,453 euro above 56 kVA. The connection itself, the trench on your land and any drilling come on top.

Watch out

The lower rate up to 56 kVA applies when the new cable is not loaded too heavily for voltage drop. If it is, Fluvius charges the higher rate. Up to 25 kVA you always stay on low voltage. Between 25 and 250 kVA the grid operator decides. Above 250 kVA you need a medium voltage connection with your own cabin.

What does a new connection cost with ORES in Wallonia?

ORES works with flat fees per connection power. In 2026 a new low-voltage connection costs from 1,007.29 euro for 9.2 kVA to 19,146.55 euro for 69.3 kVA, excl. VAT. If your connection needs a network extension outside a residential zone, that extension comes on top and is at your cost. Cable beyond 25 metres on private land is charged extra as well. The studies are free up to 56 kVA.

The fee climbs steeply with the power you ask for. That is why the size of the connection matters as much as the distance, in Wallonia as in Flanders. ORES also warns that designing, permitting and building new grid capacity sometimes takes several years.

Why is a grid connection often more expensive than the quote?

Because the quote covers the grid operator's part, not yours. Five costs often come on top, and together they can matter more than the price per metre.

  • Your own land. The trench, the sleeve and the cable beyond 25 metres on private land are for your account, with both Fluvius and ORES.
  • Drilling. Under a road, a watercourse or another obstacle, Fluvius charges 144.05 euro per metre of directional drilling.
  • The power step. Ask for more than 56 kVA in Flanders and the extension rate goes from 23.05 to 91.51 euro per metre.
  • The wait. A building you cannot switch on earns nothing, while your costs keep running.
  • The bill that follows. A connection comes with network costs every year. In Flanders the capacity tariff alone averages about 53.39 euro per kW of peak per year (2026, excl. VAT). Our article on calculating the capacity tariff explains how that adds up.

Important

Compare the full cable bill with the alternative, not only the quote. Add the work on your own land, the drilling, the study, the power step and the months without power.

What are the alternatives when a grid connection is too expensive?

There are four realistic routes. Which one wins depends on distance, power and when you use your electricity.

Route How it works Fits when Watch out
Pay for the extensionThe grid operator lays the cable to your siteYou are not far beyond the free 100 m, and you use a lot at night or in winterThe extras on your land, the power step and the wait
Smaller connection plus a battery (semi-off-grid)You ask for less power; solar panels and a battery carry the peaks; the grid is a second sourceYour peaks are short, or you use most power by dayYou still need a cable, but a cheaper one
Fully off-gridSolar panels and a battery supply the site; a generator covers dark winter weeksThe grid is very far, and your use is modest or mostly by dayWinter sizing and a back-up source
Generator onlyA diesel generator supplies everythingShort term, for example during constructionFuel, noise, maintenance and running hours

A plant nursery in Jabbeke shows the idea. Its 32 A connection stayed as it was, while the semi-off-grid system gives the irrigation pumps a 63 A supply. Our article on more power without a grid upgrade explains how that works.

When is a battery cheaper than a grid extension?

A battery is cheaper when the cable is long, when the power step pushes you into the expensive rate, or when you cannot wait. Four questions settle it for your site:

How far is the nearest grid cable?

Within the free 100 metres, the cable is hard to beat. Every metre beyond it adds to the bill, and on your own land every metre beyond 25 is yours.

How much power do you really need, and for how long?

If only short peaks go above 56 kVA, a battery can carry them. A smaller connection then keeps you in the cheaper rate.

When do you use your power?

By day, solar and a battery do most of the work. Mostly at night or in winter, a grid connection stays the better source.

How long can you wait?

Months without power cost money too. Put that next to the quote.

Our verdict

Choose the cable when you are close to the grid, need steady power around the clock, or use most of it in winter. Choose semi-off-grid when you need a connection but not a heavy one: ask for less power and let a battery carry the peaks. Choose fully off-grid when the grid is far away and your use is modest or mostly by day.

Which Belgian sites chose a battery instead of a long cable?

These projects all faced a grid that was too far, too expensive or missing. Each one solved it with its own power instead of a new cable. For a horse stable or riding school, read how to power a horse stable far from the grid.

What happens when you contact YouPower?

It starts with the grid operator's quote and your numbers. From there, one team takes you from the first calculation to a working system.

  • You send what you have. The quote or the grid operator's answer, the distance, and your expected use. The quotation form asks for your yearly use in kWh.
  • We measure where we can. Actual and peak use over a period size everything, from battery to inverters and cables.
  • Our engineering office calculates the system. Panels, inverters, battery and, if needed, a generator. As at Van Zele, the study can weigh the cost against a classic connection.
  • We build, test and commission it. We carry out the entire installation, test it and put it into service.
  • We keep following it. You follow the system in real time in the app, with alerts on your phone. Our after-sales service follows up, and we are reachable 24/7.

Frequently asked questions

Who pays for a grid extension in Flanders?

Fluvius pays for the first 100 metres of new cable on public land. Beyond that you pay per metre, at 23.05 euro up to 56 kVA or 91.51 euro above it (2026, excl. VAT). The work on your own land beyond 25 metres is always for your account.

Can I dig the trench on my own land myself?

On your own land you usually prepare the trench and the sleeve yourself, following the grid operator's specifications. On public land only the grid operator works. Ask for the specifications before you start digging.

Is it allowed to run a site without a grid connection?

Yes, but it is still an electrical installation with rules. In Flanders an island installation with an inverter of 800 VA or more is notified to the Vlaamse Nutsregulator. A new installation is inspected under the AREI before use. Check your permit early.

Can I still connect to the grid later?

Yes. An off-grid system can be connected to the public grid later, for example as semi-off-grid with a transfer switch.

Do I still need a generator without a grid connection?

In Belgium, usually yes, as a back-up for the dark winter weeks. It starts only when the battery runs low. At Van Zele the design assumed the generator would cover about 5% of the yearly demand.

Has your grid operator quoted a long cable?

Send us the quote, the distance and what you plan to run on the site. One of our engineers will tell you honestly which route is the better buy: the cable, a smaller connection with a battery, or fully off-grid.
