Your solar inverter trips on high grid voltage because Belgian rules make it disconnect above a 10-minute average of 253 V or above 264.5 V. Check your cable, phase and settings, and report it to your grid operator. If the street stays weak, use the noon power yourself or switch to a semi off grid system.
It is a clear day in May, and the display says grid fault or overvoltage. Ten minutes later it produces again, then stops around noon. Your installer says it is fine.
A site in Gingelom had the same regular dropouts. Since we installed a 30 kVA semi-off-grid system with 46.2 kWh of battery, they can no longer happen.
Why does the grid voltage in your street rise on sunny days?
Your inverter only exports by pushing a slightly higher voltage than the grid, which is designed around 230 V. Every metre of cable adds a little, so the inverter sees more than your meter. At noon the sun shines on every roof at once, as Fluvius puts it.
Why the voltage climbs on a sunny day
Classic cases: the last houses on a long rural feeder, farms at the end of the line, streets where half the roofs have panels. On your side, three things make it worse.
- A cable that is too thin or too long. Fluvius limits the voltage drop over connection cable and installation to 1%; RESA applies 1% between inverter and meter.
- Single-phase inverters on the wrong phase. RESA advises one three-phase inverter over two or three single-phase ones, and at most 5 kVA per phase. For a business, see which inverter a business needs: solar, battery or UPS.
- Settings stricter than the Belgian rules. RESA notes that some inverters disconnect instantly at 253 V, which makes them trip much more often.
We hear it in the field too: street voltages rise, and sometimes the supply drops out. In May 2026 Fluvius described a hexagon analysis of vulnerable zones in Flanders, to plan new cables and cabins.
At what voltage must a solar inverter disconnect in Belgium?
Annex C of the Synergrid prescription C10/11 (edition 2.4, 15 October 2025) sets the trip limits for anything that produces power on the grid. A trip is not a defect.
| Protection function | Trip setting | Plain meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Overvoltage, 10-minute average | 230 V + 10% = 253 V | If the average over 10 minutes passes 253 V, the inverter disconnects. |
| Overvoltage | 230 V + 15% = 264.5 V | Above 264.5 V it disconnects immediately (within 200 ms). |
| Undervoltage | 230 V - 20% = 184 V | Too low a voltage also makes it disconnect. |
| Frequency | 51.5 Hz / 47.5 Hz | Outside this band it disconnects. |
EN 50160 sets what the grid owes you: 95% of weekly 10-minute averages between 207 V and 253 V (230 V plus or minus 10%). If your street regularly sits above 253 V, the grid operator has to solve it, not you.
C10/11 (D.7.2) does allow voltage-dependent power reduction, P(U): the inverter throttles as the voltage rises instead of switching off. Small installations may also absorb reactive power above 105% of 230 V.
How much production do you lose when your inverter trips?
Every trip is lost production, because the inverter waits until the grid is stable before it restarts. Trips hit your best hours, mostly in spring and summer.
A sunny day in spring or summer: when does the inverter trip?
Nobody bills you for it, so the loss stays invisible. Compare a sunny day with trips to one without: the flat gaps around noon are your loss, and the event log counts the trips.
Fluvius assumes a flat 34 kWh per kVA for its extra compensation to green certificate owners: 340 kWh for a 10 kVA inverter. Your real loss can be lower or higher. A farm or SME pays twice: noon pumps, cooling or ventilation then run on grid power.
What can you do when your solar inverter trips on high grid voltage?
Start free and cheap; move on only when that does not work.
| Option | What it changes | Cost | Time | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Check your own side | Cable section, phase choice, Belgian settings | An installer visit; cable work if the drop is above 1% | Days | Always first |
| 2. Report to the grid operator | Operator measures and fixes the street | Free; Fluvius charges a travel cost if your own installation is not compliant | 10 working days to first contact; 30 days for small fixes; about 4 months for structural works; 1 to 2 years for a new cabin | Always, in parallel |
| 3. Enable P(U) / reactive power | Inverter throttles instead of tripping | Usually a settings change by the installer | Days | Inverters that support it |
| 4. Use more at noon | Less export, so less voltage rise | Free | Now | Homes and sites with flexible loads |
| 5. Battery (home or business) | Stores the noon surplus | Ask us: depends on size | Depends on the project | Until the battery is full |
| 6. Zero injection | Nothing is exported; surplus is curtailed | Control and metering | Depends on the project | When export earns little anyway |
| 7. Semi-off-grid | Panels feed your own island grid; the street is back-up only | Ask us: sized on your consumption | Depends on the project | Farms, SMEs, rural homes with high use, up to 75.6 kVA |
- Step 1: Log every trip. Note date, time and error code, and export a sunny-day monitoring curve.
- Step 2: Check your own installation. Have your installer check the voltage drop from inverter to meter (Fluvius has sheets for 3x230 V and 3N400V), the phase and the Belgian country setting. Moving a single-phase inverter to the phase with the heaviest consumers helps, as does one three-phase unit instead of two.
- Step 3: Fix the settings, never the limits. An installer may set the Belgian country code, correct a too strict trip setting and enable P(U) or reactive power. Raising the 253 V or 264.5 V limits or disabling protection is forbidden: say no.
- Step 4: File a complaint about high voltage. Check the Fluvius network checker for known trips in your street, call Fluvius on 078 35 35 00 (24 hours a day) and keep the report date.
- Step 5: Use your own power at noon. Fluvius and RESA advise running the dishwasher, washing machine, heating, air conditioning and electric car charging in the sun. On three phases the loads must share your inverter's phase; on a weak street it rarely stops tripping.
- Step 6: If it keeps happening, have a battery, zero injection or a semi-off-grid system calculated on your own data.
Fluvius measures where needed and explains the fix within a month of its visit. Structural work takes 18 working weeks; a new cabin waits on land and permits. Compensation is a gesture, not a solution.
Fluvius pays it after 30 days without a fix, if your installation is registered in Mijn Fluvius and the cause is not on your side. In 2025 that is 5 euro per kVA, paid by the end of November or February. Green certificate owners get extra on the 34 kWh per kVA: for 5 kVA, 25 euro plus that part. Lost production is never refunded.
In Wallonia, RESA measures and decides on corrective action after its intervention form for low-voltage injection problems (installations up to 10 kVA). ORES explains the same limits; in Brussels, Sibelga is the grid operator.
Will a battery or a semi-off-grid system stop my inverter tripping?
A battery helps only while it is charging. It stores the noon surplus instead of exporting it. A battery-control provider active in the Netherlands and Flanders analysed its customers: in its example the battery is full at 3 pm, and tripping returns.
Size it on your noon surplus and let it charge in the high-voltage hours, not first thing in the morning. A home battery on Victron ESS works with almost any existing inverter. Want it to keep your house running when the street drops out? Read our article on a home battery with backup power.
A semi-off-grid system stops the tripping for good. Panels, battery and consumers form their own island grid. Our automatic transfer switch connects it to the grid only at night, in dull spells or with an empty battery. Unused solar power never flows back, so street voltage no longer matters.
How semi-off-grid stops the tripping
In Gingelom the street is now only the back-up when energy runs short. A farm in Tielt runs 45 kVA with 123.2 kWh and should draw only about 5% of its yearly use from the street. Our systems reach 75.6 kVA on a standard 3 x 400 V + N, 63 A connection and keep running when the grid fails.

Does your inverter trip on sunny days?
Send us your monitoring data or photos of the inverter log and connection, and we tell you which step fits.
Can the grid voltage at home also be too low?
Yes: some rural sites see dimming lights and motors that struggle to start. EN 50160 sets the floor at 207 V for most of the week, so report low voltage to your grid operator too.
In Gedinne, in the Walloon forest, the grid delivered only about 180 V on 3 x 230 V. Our semi-off-grid system with 46.2 kWh converts it to 3 x 400 V. The grid charges the battery; battery and inverters supply the house.
When is a battery or semi-off-grid worth the cost?
Weigh it against your tripping hours plus, for a business, the grid power bought at noon. If the street is reinforced within months, a settings check and patience may do. Is a new cabin a year or two away, or does the street keep failing? Then a battery or a semi off grid system pays back in production you keep.
A battery or zero injection gets a fixed quote, sized on your noon surplus. Semi-off-grid gets a written quote based on your quarter-hour consumption and roof.
Our verdict
Not every tripping inverter needs a battery. Sometimes the inverter's own voltage measurement is off: a separate measurement at the meter shows it, and the inverter needs fixing, not the street. Invest only when the street stays weak after the free steps, or the grid fix is a year away.

Frequently asked questions
Can my installer raise the inverter's voltage limit?
No. C10/11 requires the settings to be sealed or password-protected, and SMA tells installers never to set higher values. Raising them shifts the risk to your neighbours' appliances.
Does zero injection solve high grid voltage?
It stops your share: a measurement at the connection point keeps export at zero, and without storage the surplus is lost. Our article on solar injection limitation for businesses explains when a battery beats curtailment.
My solar inverter trips when the grid voltage rises. Is an off-grid system the answer?
For SMEs and farms on 3 x 400 V + N, semi-off-grid is, with the grid as back-up. For a home it is often overkill: the settings check, the report and a home battery come first.
Is the street holding your solar power back?
We are a Victron Energy Certified Partner for semi-off-grid systems and home and business batteries in Belgium. Send your inverter log, a sunny-day curve and connection type, and we say honestly if a settings check or report is enough. If not, we size, install, test and commission the system, followed in an app with phone alerts.
