Only in part: a battery rarely runs a large wind machine through a whole frost night on its own. A semi-off-grid system charges from solar panels and the grid by day. At night it keeps the sprinkler pump, the controls and the smaller orchard frost loads on electricity, with the grid or a generator behind it.
You know these nights: the forecast says minus two, the blossom is open, and the alarm wakes you before three. You start the pump or the wind machine and hope nothing trips.
In Gingelom, in Haspengouw, the solar panels on a site kept dropping out. A semi-off-grid system with 30 kVA of charge power and 46.2 kWh of batteries stopped that; the grid is now only a back-up.
When do frost nights hit the fruit region?
From bloom until the Ice Saints, and bloom keeps coming earlier. In Haspengouw and Hageland that window now often opens in late March.
pcfruit, the fruit research centre in Sint-Truiden, has seen orchards bloom ever earlier over the past ten years. In 2024, the Haspengouw blossom opened three weeks earlier than normal, the earliest start since measurements began in 1943. Its director told VILT that an early bloom more than doubles the chance of spring frost damage.
VRT NWS noted in March 2026 that it can freeze until the Ice Saints, 11 to 14 May. In April 2024 it showed a Hageland fruit company placing five mobile wind machines between its apple and pear trees. That night dropped to minus 1.9 °C.
The dangerous nights are calm and clear. Heat radiates away, cold air settles in the orchard, and a warmer layer forms 2 to 50 metres higher. pcfruit adds that humidity, slope, orientation and nearby woods or hedges change the risk of each plot.
Which orchard frost protection runs on electricity, and how much power does it draw?
In Belgian orchards today, mostly the sprinkler pump and the controls. Wind machines and hot-air cannons usually run on fuel.
| Method | Energy in Belgian practice (pcfruit) | Electric power if electric |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed wind machine, 5 to 7 ha | Own engine on propane or diesel, or a tractor PTO; about 30 kg propane per hour | A 75 kW machine per 4 to 5 ha (FAO, shaft power) |
| Mobile wind machine, under 1 to 4 ha | About 25 kg propane per hour | Electric fans of 30 kW exist abroad (EECA) |
| Sprinkling (over or under the canopy) | Pump on electricity or diesel | Tens of kW for a few hectares (see below) |
| Hot-air cannon | Propane; the mobile type also uses diesel | None worth counting |
| Electrical tracing (vineyards) | Grid or generator | 50 kW per hectare at 10 W/m |
pcfruit names only engines and tractor drives for wind machines. An electric wind machine in an orchard is used abroad, for example in New Zealand and California.
Electrical tracing is a heating wire along the vine cordon. pcfruit says it does not work in apple and pear trees, whose crowns are too complex, but it does in vineyards. That matters in the Hageland, where wine growers face the same spring frost.
That power and the plot location decide whether the farm connection carries it, or a separate connection or generator is needed.
How much energy does one frost night take?
Hundreds of kilowatt-hours per machine, every night the frost returns. The frost night energy use is simply power times hours.
Take an eight-hour night, the basis pcfruit uses for its fuel costs. A 30 kW electric fan then uses 240 kWh, a wind machine with a 75 kW drive 600 kWh. One hectare of vineyard tracing at 50 kW uses 400 kWh.
Our illustrative calculation for a sprinkler pump: five hectares at 4 mm per hour need 200 m³ of water per hour. At 3.5 bar and a pump efficiency of 60%, that is about 32 kW, or roughly 256 kWh a night. Your pump curve and pressure will differ, so measure yours.
Electricity used in one eight-hour frost night
pcfruit advises a water buffer for 3 to 5 frost nights in a row when you sprinkle from a well. A battery faces the same question: can it refill in one spring day before the next night?
In New Zealand, EECA followed an orchard with two 30 kW electric fans. Fighting frost with them took 6.6 MWh a year, and EECA counts on about 100 hours of use a year. To power them, the orchard moved from single-phase to three-phase, at a cost of more than 100,000 New Zealand dollars.
Can solar panels and a battery carry a whole frost night?
For a small load, yes. For a full-size wind machine, rarely on their own.
A frost night and the spring day after
A clear frost night is often followed by a sunny day, and the panels charge the battery for the next night. That works when the night needs tens of kilowatt-hours, not hundreds. The farm in Tielt has 123.2 kWh of batteries: about four hours of one 30 kW fan.
So the honest split: the battery takes the loads that must never stop and the power the connection cannot give. The engine of the wind machine, a generator or the grid delivers the bulk of the energy on the longest nights.
Watch out
pcfruit says the effect of a wind machine disappears in winds stronger than 8 km/h. On windy frost nights with dry northern air, a fully charged battery behind a wind machine changes nothing.
Why must the sprinkler pump never stop in a frost night?
Because freezing water only protects the blossom while fresh water keeps coming. pcfruit is clear: once sprinkling starts, it must run until the ice begins to melt in the morning.
Sprinkling that stops too early can cause more damage than no sprinkling at all. The pcfruit rule of thumb: if the pump fails, sprinkling must be running again within 10 minutes. A power cut can come on any night, and in ten minutes someone has to notice, walk out and start a generator.
A battery system that can run as an island takes over the sprinkler frost protection pump in a power cut, without that walk. An emergency power supply for your business compares the options, from battery to generator.
In Maasmechelen, in Limburg, a generator only waited for emergencies. A semi-off-grid system made it useful: it now charges the batteries from the grid or from the generator.
Why do generators fail when you need them? See a back-up generator that fails to start and a manual or automatic transfer switch.
Important
Motors draw several times their running current when they start. Size the inverter on the start of the pump, not on its running power. The start-up current of a heavy machine explains why.
Is your connection sized for the cold store or for the frost night?
Usually for the cold store at harvest: cooling down a full cell of warm fruit gives the peak of the year. Frost protection then arrives in another season, and at night.
How long a battery keeps a cold room cold covers that load. The frost load comes for a few dozen nights a year at most, but it cannot fail on any of them. And the heavy connection an electric wind machine needs is paid for all year.
An electric frost load adds a second peak in March, April or May. In Flanders, the capacity tariff charges the highest quarter-hour of each month, averaged over the last 12 months. The FAO already noted that electric wind machines carry standby charges for the line, whether they run or not.
For the Flemish calculation, see how to calculate the capacity tariff for your business.
Parts of the Flemish grid are congested: check your area on the grid congestion map before you plan an electric frost system. If Fluvius refuses a heavier connection, read what to do when a heavier connection is refused.
Watch out
The capacity tariff is the Flemish system. In the Walloon part of the Hesbaye, low-voltage sites up to 56 kVA pay no capacity term on the standard tariff.

Where does a battery fit on a fruit farm?
Where power must not stop, and where the connection is the limit.
The cold store
Shaves the harvest peak in autumn and keeps the cells cold in a cut. In spring the same battery caps the frost peak: cold store and frost protection share one system.
Controls, sensors and alarms
Frost alarms, weather stations and the pump control must run whatever happens. They use little, so a battery carries them for a long time.
A small electric load on a weak connection
A mobile electric fan or a small vineyard plot with tracing. The battery adds power on top of the connection for the hours that count.
Our semi-off-grid systems are built for SMEs and farms with a standard 3 x 400 V + N connection, up to 75.6 kVA. On fruit farms with a larger connection or their own cabin, a business battery does the same job.
Irrigation in summer uses the same pump and the same logic in daylight: see a solar irrigation pump with or without a battery. Storage crops on mixed farms add their own night loads: see potato, onion and grain storage.
Our verdict
A battery is not the answer when the frost load is large, rare and already runs on fuel. A fixed propane wind machine on 5 to 7 hectares is built to run without the grid, so keep it. The same goes for a diesel pump with a big water buffer. A battery earns its place when an electric pump, a cold store and a weak connection meet on the same farm. It also fits when the frost system must run through a power cut.
Renting a generator for the frost season can be the cheaper bridge: renting a generator or buying a battery compares both.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a permit for a wind machine?
For a fixed wind machine in Flanders, yes: pcfruit says you need a building permit, while mobile machines do not. pcfruit still advises you to inform the municipality and talk to the neighbours: local rules may apply and noise is the main concern.
Can a battery replace the fuel of a propane wind machine?
Only if you replace the machine with an electric one, and then the battery must hold the whole night. For most orchards that is too much energy, so a battery fits better next to the machine, for the pump and the controls.
Does a frost night count in my capacity tariff?
Yes, in Flanders: the highest quarter-hour of the month counts, day or night. An electric frost load in April can set your April peak.
