For a business battery or solar panels, most Belgian companies get their support through the tax return. The increased thematic investment deduction lets a sole trader or small company deduct 40% of the purchase price from its taxable profit. A regional certificate proves the investment qualifies. Cash subsidies are rare: the Flemish ecology premium and the Walloon GREEN aid do not list batteries or solar panels in 2026. Farmers in Flanders can apply for VLIF support instead, but not for both.
You have a quote on the table, and somewhere in it is the line "40% subsidy". Or you are holding off, because surely a premium for batteries will come back. Maybe you are self-employed and wonder whether a battery at your workshop even counts as a business asset. Business owners ask these questions on forums every week. The answers often come from the Netherlands, where the rules are different.
Here is what nobody tells you up front. A deduction of 40% is not 40% off the price. It lowers your taxable profit, so what you gain depends on your tax rate. The order of the paperwork matters more than the percentage. Sign the order before the energy study or the aid application, and several routes close for good. And waiting for a premium that is not on any list costs you a year of savings on your bill.
A dairy farm in Lokeren shows where the real money is. Fluvius could not supply the growing farm without a switch to medium voltage. That budget went into solar panels, a wind turbine and a battery system. It paid for itself within four years, because no medium voltage was needed.
How does the investment deduction for a battery or solar panels work in 2026?
The investment deduction lets you subtract a percentage of what you invest from your taxable profit, in the year you invest. Since 1 January 2025 a new system applies, with a basic deduction and an increased "thematic" deduction for energy investments.
| Who invests | Basic deduction | Increased thematic deduction (energy list) |
|---|---|---|
| Natural person (sole trader, liberal profession) | 10% | 40% |
| Small company (fiscal definition) | 10% | 40% |
| Other companies | not available | 30% according to FOD Financiën; a bill to raise it to 40% is being prepared |

A battery and solar panels are both on the energy list. A battery falls under category 8, "temporary storage of electrical and thermal energy". That covers the storage system, the inverters that belong to it and the metering and control equipment. Solar panels and wind turbines fall under category 9, "production of renewable energy". Charging points for electric vehicles moved to a separate transport list.
Share of the investment you may deduct from taxable profit, energy list 2026
An example, for illustration only. A small company invests 100,000 euro in solar panels and a battery. With the thematic deduction it may subtract 40,000 euro from its taxable profit that year. What that saves depends on the tax rate on that profit. If profit is too low, the deduction carries over to later years without a time limit. You still depreciate the installation as usual.
Watch out
The investment must be new, used in Belgium only for your business, and depreciated over at least three years. Second-hand equipment and the private part of a mixed-use installation do not count.
What conditions and papers do you need for the increased investment deduction?
You need a certificate from the region where the installation stands, and the file behind it. In Flanders, VEKA issues it through an online application. The file contains an energy study (for a battery) or a technical description (for solar panels), and a spreadsheet template that calculates the payback time.
The route to the 40% deduction
- Minimum 1,000 euro. Smaller investments do not qualify for the increased deduction.
- Not too profitable. The payback time must be at least three years. A company that is not small must also stay at an internal rate of return (IRR) of at most 13%. The calculation includes the tax effect and the deduction itself.
- Study first. After the transition period, the energy study must be dated no later than the first invoice. Below 10,000 euro no study is needed, but the template still is.
- Battery and solar together = two applications, one calculation. The payback is calculated for the whole system. If it meets the rules, both applications qualify; if not, neither does.
Timing in 2026: the regions and FOD Financiën are still finishing the agreement that lets certificates be issued. For investments made in 2025 and 2026, you can already claim the deduction in your tax return. Keep your invoices, technical sheets and a short motivation note at hand. You must still apply for the certificate. The deadline is 31 December 2026 or later, set at six months after the agreement is published.
Tip
Ask your installer for the technical data and savings figures before you sign. They go straight into the study and the payback template.
Is there a subsidy for a business battery in Flanders?
Not as a premium for the battery itself. The ecology premium (ecologiepremie+) of VLAIO only pays for technologies on its limitative list. The list valid from 1 January 2026 contains no stationary battery and no solar panels. Older articles that say otherwise refer to earlier lists.
What does exist in Flanders for a company battery or solar panels:
- The increased investment deduction described above, via VEKA.
- The Ecoboostlening of PMV: a subordinated loan of 15,000 to 150,000 euro, over 3 to 10 years, at 3% interest. It is for self-employed people and SMEs (main occupation) with at least 18 months of activity. Batteries and solar panels are on its list.
- Strategic ecology support (strategische ecologiesteun): for unique or innovative projects from 1.5 million euro, such as large-scale energy storage. Support ranges from 20 to 55%, up to 500,000 euro per three years.
- A Fluvius premium for removing asbestos from the roof of an unheated, non-residential building, such as a shed or a barn. It applies when you install solar panels on that roof at the same time.
Important
Public aid rarely stacks. The ecology premium cannot be combined with the investment deduction, a VEKA premium or a Fluvius premium for the same costs. The Ecoboostlening cannot be combined with the ecology premium or strategic ecology support.

Which aid applies to a battery or solar panels on a farm?
In Flanders, a farm usually looks at VLIF first. The ecology premium excludes investments for primary agriculture. VLIF productive investment support does list a "battery for storing green energy" and a wind turbine, both in its 40% support group.
- The battery must store your own green power and hold at least 20 kWh. One battery per farm is supported in 2023-2027, and support is capped at that of a 100 kWh battery.
- For a farm still connected to the grid, total battery capacity is capped by a formula. It uses your yearly renewable production and your yearly use, each divided by 121. Fully off-grid farms are exempt from that cap.
- Wind turbine: total green production on the farm may not exceed the farm's yearly energy needs, shown with digital meter data.
- Not together with the increased deduction. VLIF support cannot be combined with other public aid, and the Flemish agriculture department names the thematic deduction explicitly.
VLIF has four application windows a year. You need three quotes from different suppliers for items without a fixed standard cost, and leasing does not qualify. The Walloon equivalent is ADISA. It covers equipment that produces renewable energy for the farm's own use. You wait until your file is declared admissible before you invest.
From practice
A dairy farm in Londerzeel wanted to avoid an expensive medium voltage cabin and connection. It now runs semi off-grid on solar panels, a wind turbine and an LFP battery. Not needing the cabin saved at least 60,000 euro from day one, before any aid was counted.
Our article on solar panels and a battery on a farm explains which loads count and how to size for them.
What aid exists for a business battery or solar panels in Wallonia and Brussels?
In Wallonia, the same federal deduction applies: 40% on the energy list, with a certificate from the SPW. The Walloon administration states on its procedure page that the system is still being implemented and that certificates cannot be issued yet. Files will be handled once the framework is final.
- GREEN investment aid (SPW Économie): supports sustainable energy use and renewable production, but explicitly excludes solar panels, storage batteries and charging points. Minimum programme 20,000 euro for an SME.
- ADISA for farmers: renewable production limited to the farm's own consumption; apply before you spend.
- Brussels: the Brussels environment administration (Leefmilieu Brussel / Bruxelles Environnement) handles the certificate for the deduction for investments in the Brussels region.

Does an off-grid system for a business qualify for aid?
Yes, the parts qualify on their own merits. The energy list does not ask whether you are connected to the grid. Solar panels and wind turbines fall under category 9, the battery and its inverters under category 8. Only on-site investments count: a cable to carry the power to a grid point elsewhere does not.
For an off-grid system, the real saving usually sits elsewhere: in the grid connection or the cabin you do not need. Our article on when off-grid pays off for a business and our comparison of grid extension costs against a battery show those numbers. Aid then shortens a payback that already works.
Watch out
A very fast payback can cost you the deduction. For a small company the thematic deduction requires a payback of at least three years. If a project that avoids a cabin pays back sooner, the basic deduction of 10% may be the one left.
Deduction, VLIF or loan: which route gives the most?
Choose the route before you sign, because most of them exclude each other. Four questions settle it.
Are you a farm?
Compare VLIF (a share of a standard cost, paid after checks) with the 40% deduction. You cannot have both for the same battery.
Is your company small in the fiscal sense?
Small companies and sole traders get 40%. Larger companies get less and must also meet the IRR limit of 13%.
Do you make enough profit?
A deduction only helps when there is profit to deduct from. It carries forward, but a loan such as the Ecoboostlening can help cash flow now.
Is the project very profitable?
A payback under three years excludes the thematic deduction for a small company. Then the basic 10% deduction is the route.
Our verdict
Do not let aid decide whether you invest. Decide on what the system saves: a medium voltage cabin, a heavier connection, a lower peak or kWh you no longer buy. Then pick the one aid route that fits, and prepare the file before the first invoice. If a system only makes sense with a premium, it usually does not make sense.
How do we help you prepare your aid file?
We start with your figures and plan the paperwork before the order.
- Step 1: You send us your consumption data or recent invoices, your connection size and your plans.
- Step 2: Analysis and sizing. We calculate what the system saves, which gives the savings figures the study and the payback template ask for.
- Step 3: Technical design, with the specifications of the battery, inverters and panels for the technical description.
- Step 4: You and your accountant choose the aid route. You file the application at the right moment, before the first invoice where the rules require it.
- Step 5: Installation, commissioning, monitoring and support.
Our business battery systems range from SME installations to modular systems up to 1 MW.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 40% deduction the same as 40% off the price?
No. You deduct 40% of the investment from your taxable profit. The tax you save is that amount multiplied by your tax rate, so the cash gain is a fraction of 40%.
Can a self-employed person claim the deduction?
Yes. Natural persons with business or professional income get the same 40% as small companies, for the part of the installation used for the business.
Does a leased battery qualify?
For the investment deduction, leasing can qualify according to the VEKA handbook. For VLIF farm support, leasing is excluded. Weighing buying against leasing? Read how a company can finance a battery: buy, lease or pay per use.
Can I still apply for 2025 investments?
Yes. For investments from 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2026, the certificate deadline moved to 31 December 2026 or later. Keep invoices, technical sheets and a motivation note ready for a tax audit.
Does a generator in an off-grid system count?
The energy list is about storage and renewable production. Check a generator with your accountant separately; do not count on it in your aid calculation.
Want to know what your project saves before you look at aid?
