What is the payback of solar panels for a business in 2026, and when does a battery belong with them?

When solar panels on a business roof still pay off in Belgium in 2026, what drives the payback, and when a battery and smart control belong with them.

What is the payback of solar panels for a business in 2026, and when does a battery belong with them?

Solar panels on a business roof still pay off in 2026: in our 100 kWp example, the payback runs from about 3.5 to 7.6 years. The share you use on site decides, since a self-used kWh saves 20 to 25 cent and an injected one earns about 2. Add a commercial battery when the surplus is structural.

You run a warehouse, a workshop or a farm with a big roof. One installer quotes a three-year payback; a neighbour says injection earns next to nothing. A battery seller shows a savings sheet too good to be true.

A site in Beveren-Melsele uses 350,000 kWh a year. Its 200 panels are laid out for direct use, backed by 154 kWh of batteries.

Are solar panels worth it for a business in 2026?

Yes, for most businesses, but only for the kWh they use themselves. Inagro, the agricultural research and advice centre in West Flanders, compares the 2026 prices per kWh.

Every kWh you inject earns roughly a tenth of what it costs to buy back. On sunny weekend afternoons the price can even turn negative: CREG counted more than 520 negative hours in Belgium in 2025.

A dairy farm that milks, cools and pumps daily uses most of its solar power. A warehouse closed at weekends injects two days out of seven. Read what is on a business electricity bill and where a battery helps to see where the saving lands.

What is the payback of solar panels for a business?

An illustrative 100 kWp roof costs about 50,000 euro and makes about 85,000 kWh a year. Its payback depends almost entirely on your self-consumption, the share you use yourself.

Assumptions (Inagro 2026): 500 euro per kWp, 850 kWh per kWp a year, running costs about 2% a year (1,000 euro). A self-used kWh saves 25 cent on low voltage, an injected kWh earns 2 cent. No subsidies, tax deduction or price rise: an illustration, not a quote.

Share used on site kWh used yourself Net value per year Simple payback
30% (closed at weekends, little daytime use)25,500about 6,565 euroabout 7.6 years
50%42,500about 10,475 euroabout 4.8 years
70% (daily production, cooling, pumps)59,500about 14,385 euroabout 3.5 years

The same roof pays back twice as fast at 70% self-use as at 30%. More panels mainly add surplus, so start from your consumption per quarter-hour.

Watch out

The real figure is somewhat lower. In Flanders part of the network cost is the capacity tariff: it follows your peak in kW, not your kWh. On medium voltage a kWh costs about 20 cent, so use your own invoice.

What decides the return on commercial solar panels?

Five things decide the return, and only one is the panel price.

Daytime use

Cooling, compressors, ventilation, milking and daytime charging match the sun and raise the return.

Orientation

Inagro advises east-west instead of south for more self-use: production spreads over morning and afternoon.

Voltage level

On medium voltage you buy cheaper, so each self-used kWh saves less.

Contract

Between businesses, warranties are what you agree on. Inagro advises one that covers both material and replacement.

Are businesses in Flanders obliged to install solar panels?

Yes, if the building takes a lot of power from the grid. Since 1 April 2026, solar panels are mandatory on buildings whose connection point takes more than 1 GWh (1,000 MWh) a year. The owner, leaseholder or holder of building rights must comply.

  • Size follows the horizontal roof area. Above the threshold in 2021 or 2022: 12.5 Wp per m2 by 1 April 2026, 18.75 Wp by 2030, 25 Wp by 2035 (1 January).
  • Other renewables can count, such as a wind turbine, a heat pump or a share in a renewable project.
  • Public buildings face a threshold of 250 MWh a year.
  • A missed deadline brings a fine that does not end the obligation.

Check the threshold yourself every year. The rules are on the Flemish government page on the solar obligation for buildings with high electricity use.

When does a battery belong with solar panels on a business?

A battery belongs with your solar panels when you have a surplus most weeks and a second job for it. Think of peak cutting, back-up or avoiding a heavier connection; storing solar alone is a thin case.

  • Move solar to later: weekend or midday surplus covers the evening or the Monday start-up peak, worth about 25 cent per kWh instead of 2.
  • Lower your quarter-hour peak: at about 53.39 euro per kW per year in Flanders in 2026 (average, excl. VAT), 20 kW off a monthly peak saves about 1,068 euro. See how to calculate the capacity tariff for your business.
  • Back-up: critical loads keep running in a power cut, if designed for it.
  • More power than your connection: at a farm in Tielt the battery system delivers the extra power, so no heavier connection was needed.
  • Cheap charging with a dynamic contract: read how a dynamic energy contract works with a business battery.

An illustrative sum: 100 kWh usable, filled on 200 days with 10% loss, moves about 18,000 kWh a year. That is worth about 4,100 euro net (18,000 kWh at 25 cent, minus 2 cent on 20,000 kWh), plus 1,068 euro for the peak. Divide the quoted battery price by that yearly value.

Our verdict

Check the surplus in your quarter-hour data first; if it is small or rare, shift loads or cap production at little or no cost. A battery sized on the roof instead of on measured use sits half empty.

Why does the whole system pay more than the panels alone?

The return comes from panels, control and storage working together, in this order.

In Tielt the boilers take the surplus, and the farm expects only about 5% of its yearly use from the grid. In Wingene, a semi-off-grid site, a full battery heats a boiler through a resistor: hot water becomes the battery. On a farm, the same control runs pumps on overproduction.

Payback gets much shorter when the system also saves a grid investment. A fast-growing dairy farm in Lokeren could only get more power on medium voltage. It spent that budget on solar panels, a wind turbine and a battery system, recovered within 4 years.

Without that avoided cost, such a system typically pays back in 6 to 8 years.

Is it different in Wallonia and Brussels?

Yes. The logic is the same, but support and tariffs differ per region.

  • Wallonia: installations above 10 kW can still get green certificates after a reservation with SPW Energie; 10 kW or less gets no support.
  • Walloon network periods: since 2026, low-voltage dual-rate customers get an extra off-peak period from 11:00 to 17:00. Peaks run 7:00 to 11:00 and 17:00 to 22:00. Midday grid power is cheaper, so moving solar to the evening peak adds more value.
  • Flanders only: the capacity tariff and the solar obligation.
  • Brussels: Sibelga has its own tariff structure, so check your invoice before sizing a battery.

Frequently asked questions

Are solar panels worth it if my business is closed at weekends?

Often yes, but less: two days out of seven go to the grid at about 2 cent per kWh. Size on weekday use, choose east-west, run cooling or charging on Saturday and let a battery move surplus to Monday.

Does injecting solar power raise my capacity tariff?

No. In Flanders only offtake counts, and solar lowers your peak only when it produces in the quarter-hour that sets it.

What do negative electricity prices mean for my solar panels?

With a contract that passes on the market price, you pay to inject in those hours, mostly sunny afternoons with low demand. Capping, self-use or storage avoids that cost.

How long do solar panels on a business roof last?

Inagro counts on 25 years, usually longer, with one inverter replacement in that period.

Can I claim subsidies or a tax deduction for business solar panels?

Rules differ per region and company type, so check the federal energy list with your accountant before you sign. Read which battery and solar subsidies and tax deductions apply to businesses in Belgium.

Want to know what solar and a battery would earn on your roof?

We start with your use, not the roof. Send a year of quarter-hour data from your grid operator or recent invoices, plus roof size and plans (chargers, machines, a heat pump). If data is missing, we measure first.

We size panels, control and battery, then design, install and commission. You follow it all in the app and VRM portal, per minute, hour or day.
