Does a battery pay off in a greenhouse or nursery with lighting, CHP and dynamic prices?

Lit crops, a CHP and a dynamic contract: when a battery pays off for a grower or nursery in Belgium, when a heat buffer does it cheaper, and what to check first.

Does a battery pay off in a greenhouse or nursery with lighting, CHP and dynamic prices?

Only when a battery in a greenhouse has daily work that nothing else on the holding does cheaper. A commercial battery cuts peaks on a small or expensive connection, uses your solar power and shifts use to cheap hours. It cannot carry your lighting, and next to a CHP it must add speed.

Your lamps run through the dark months and your CHP runs on the price of power against gas. Now a supplier offers a battery with a payback under five years. Or the new irrigation pump trips your nursery's 3x400 V connection every morning.

A plant nursery in Jabbeke kept its 32 A connection and now gets 63 A for its pumps from a battery system.

Does a battery pay off in a greenhouse? It depends on your holding

The answer differs per holding: the Flemish Department of Agriculture sees no generic solution for every type of greenhouse holding.

In Flanders the CHP (combined heat and power, Dutch "WKK") is the reference for energy-hungry crops: tomato, cucumber, pepper, aubergine, lettuce and cut roses. About 80% of holdings, often the less energy-intensive ones, still heat with a gas or oil boiler.

Your holding What a battery can do What competes with it First check

The further down the table, the bigger the battery and the harder the sum. Waiting costs too: idle pumps, or the evening price every quarter-hour.

How much power does greenhouse lighting use, and can a battery carry it?

No battery of a normal business size carries greenhouse lighting through the night. Assimilation lighting (lamps that let the crop grow in the dark months) draws power like a small factory.

In a Dutch trial with cluster tomatoes under Kas als Energiebron, full LED cut lighting power use from 304 to 224 kWh per m2.

Tip

The cheapest kWh is the one you do not use: LED saved more power in that trial than any battery would shift. The Department also calls LED a quick saving where lighting is a crop choice.

Does a battery make sense next to a CHP (WKK) in a greenhouse?

Next to a CHP, a battery only pays for the speed and flexibility the CHP cannot give. A CHP makes power, heat and CO2 for the crop and runs when power is dear against gas.

Power sales, heat-power certificates and market know-how keep the energy cost of the heaviest users under control, the Department writes. In 2023 Flemish greenhouse horticulture injected more power than it took.

Water stores heat cheaper. Inagro calculates that 100 litres heated from 10 to 80 °C hold about 8.15 kWh, while a battery costs 250 to 600 euro per kWh. Greenport West-Holland sees e-boilers as very popular in the Dutch Westland.

A battery stores electricity for later: pumps, cooling, control and lamps. Many holdings need both.

A battery also reacts faster than an engine that must start and warm up. An aggregator (a company that bundles the flexibility of many sites) can offer that speed to the grid. In early 2025 about ten batteries of 4 to 10 MWh ran at Dutch growers.

Their supplier claims a payback often under five years from frequency regulation, imbalance and trading: a Dutch supplier's figure, not a Belgian guarantee. Check that the contract keeps your own peaks and critical loads covered first. Read whether a business battery can earn money on the balancing market (FCR, aFRR).

Watch out

Around 2030 heat-power certificates stop being granted, a turning point according to the Department. Replacing or stopping your CHP then? Put the battery in that plan.

How does a battery earn money with dynamic prices in a greenhouse?

On a dynamic contract, a battery charges in cheap or negative hours and delivers in the expensive ones. The gap keeps growing. According to the federal regulator CREG, Belgium had 520 hours with a negative day-ahead price in 2025, mostly on sunny, windy or quiet days.

On 24 June 2026 the Belgian day-ahead price was about 80 euro per MWh at midday. At 20:45 it hit 1,038.25 euro, VRT reported: solar drops out in the evening while demand stays high.

It matters for loads you cannot move: cooling, climate control, pumps at a set time and the lamps in the evening. Our Dynamic ESS software plans charging and discharging on quarter-hour prices and the weather forecast, so nobody watches prices.

Boerenbond's energy specialist estimated in 2025 that a farm battery that only stores its own solar power pays back in 8 to 9 years. Grid services through an aggregator or energy community bring that forward by a few years. Day-ahead and negative prices for a business are explained in a dynamic energy contract with a battery.

Does a battery lower the capacity tariff of a greenhouse?

Yes, if your peak comes from loads that start together. Its value depends on region and connection.

  • Flanders, low voltage: Fluvius bills the average of your monthly peaks over 12 months, with a minimum of 2.5 kW.
  • Flanders, medium voltage: Fluvius bills an access power you choose in advance plus your monthly peak. Above it, you pay the difference for 12 months at a higher rate.
  • Wallonia, low voltage up to 56 kVA: the standard ORES tariff has no capacity term.
  • Wallonia, sites with peak metering: ORES bills a capacity term per kW on your monthly and yearly peaks.

In a greenhouse the peak often comes in the morning: irrigation pumps start, lamps are still on, the packing room cooling runs. A battery covers that quarter-hour.

Our article on calculating the capacity tariff for businesses prices your peak with the Fluvius tables. Business peak demand shows where it comes from.

What does a battery do for a plant nursery with a small grid connection?

For a nursery on a small connection, a battery is often the cheapest way to more power. The alternative is a heavier connection or a medium voltage cabin.

From practice

In Jabbeke a new irrigation pump needed more than the 3x400 V connection, and the grid offer was medium voltage at a high price. Now that connection only charges the batteries of a semi-off-grid system of 45 kVA and 92.4 kWh. Frequency drives keep the heaviest pumps running smoothly.

A research site in Beernem powers a private home, greenhouses, ponds and scientific research fully off the grid. It runs on 17 kWp of solar panels, a battery and a generator for spells of high use or little sun.

Its bill had topped 800 euro a month. On the grid, those panels meant a Fluvius grid study and maybe a medium voltage cabin, up to 30,000 euro.

Only one big pump start to solve? Read when a frequency drive alone is enough in more power without a heavier grid connection.

When does a battery in a greenhouse pay off, and when not?

A battery is the wrong choice when something you already have does the job cheaper. Ask these questions before comparing quotes.

What does your quarter-hour data show?

Peaks per month and hours of heavy grid use. A battery that does little each day pays back slowly.

Which loads cannot move?

The battery serves those; shift everything else to cheap hours first.

What is your contract?

Fixed, day and night, or dynamic: only dynamic lets the battery earn on price gaps.

How much solar power do you inject, and when?

Stored surplus is worth the gap between the injection price and your purchase price.

What would the alternative cost?

A heavier connection, a cabin, an e-boiler or a bigger buffer tank: the battery must beat the cheapest.

Our verdict

Clearest case: a low-voltage nursery or greenhouse with heavy pumps, a connection at its limit, solar panels and a dynamic contract. For a lit grower with a CHP it is a flexibility tool at MWh scale, often built around balancing markets. In between, the quarter-hour data decides.

Subsidies depend on your region and company: see subsidies and tax deductions for a business battery. Wind fits a greenhouse better in autumn and winter, the Department notes: read about a small wind turbine on a farm or business. For the roof: whether business solar panels still pay off.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a battery last in a greenhouse?

Boerenbond's energy specialist counts on at least 10 years or 6,000 cycles; a full cycle every day uses them faster. Lifetime is covered in battery storage for businesses.

Everything stops during a power cut. Is a greenhouse battery a solution?

For short cuts, yes: a battery system that runs as an island takes over without a noticeable gap. For a long winter cut, a generator as second line stays more logical, as in Beernem.

Who installs a commercial battery in a greenhouse or plant nursery?

An installer who measures first: we build modular business battery systems up to 1 MW, with monitoring and control included.
