How to calculate the payback of a business battery

Calculate the payback of a business battery step by step: avoided cabin, capacity tariff, solar and back-up, with a worked example on 2026 public tariffs.

How to calculate the payback of a business battery

You calculate the payback of a business battery for a heavy machine, pump or peak in three moves. Add up what it saves every year: capacity tariff, solar power you no longer inject, downtime avoided. Subtract losses and maintenance. Then deduct the grid investment it avoids, such as a cabin. Payback = (investment minus avoided investment) / yearly net savings.

The new pump or production line is bought. Then the grid operator answers: "medium voltage". And an installer quote says the battery is paid back in 4 years. Which number do you trust? A farmer on a forum called a 2.5 to 4 year payback "all too good to be true", and he had a point.

The cabin quote is only the start of the grid route. A cabin also brings yearly inspections, a waiting time and a higher peak on every bill once the machine runs. And a payback figure made without your quarter-hour data is a sales figure, not a calculation. This article gives you the method, so you can check both.

From practice

A dairy farm in Lokeren was growing fast. Fluvius could not guarantee the power without medium voltage, so the farm invested in solar panels, a wind turbine and a battery system instead. That investment was recouped within 4 years, because no medium voltage was needed. Without that avoided cost, such a system usually pays back in 6 to 8 years.

Which savings count in the payback of a business battery?

Four streams count in the payback of a business battery. They are the grid investment it avoids, the peak it keeps off your meter, the solar power it moves and the downtime it prevents. Losses and maintenance come off. The first stream is paid once; the other three come back every year.

Stream What it is Where your number comes from
Avoided grid investment (one-off)The cabin or heavier connection you no longer needThe grid operator's answer and quote

How much is a solar kWh worth? Our article on whether business solar panels pay off compares a kWh you use yourself with a kWh you inject. For the downtime stream, the method in our article on compensation after a power cut helps you put a price on one hour without power.

How do you calculate the payback of a business battery, step by step?

You calculate the payback of a business battery in eight steps, from the machine to one number. Do them in this order, because the grid route decides how large the first number is.

  1. Step 1: Measure the load. Note the machine's power when it runs and its hours per day. Note how it starts too: a frequency drive (a controller that lets a motor start gently) changes a lot. Download a year of quarter-hour data from Mijn Fluvius.
  2. Step 2: Price the grid route. Ask the grid operator what the machine needs: a heavier connection or a cabin, what it costs and how long you wait.
  3. Step 3: Count the avoided investment. If the battery makes that grid work unnecessary, its cost goes into the sum as a one-off credit.
  4. Step 4: Value the peak. Multiply the kW the battery keeps off your meter by the capacity tariff of your grid operator.
  5. Step 5: Value the solar kWh. Multiply the kWh the battery delivers from your own panels by the price you pay minus the price you get for injection.
  6. Step 6: Value the back-up. Multiply the outage hours you expect per year by your cost per hour of downtime. Leave it at zero if you have no data.
  7. Step 7: Subtract the minus lines. Take off the losses in the battery, maintenance and monitoring, and the network savings a cabin would have given you.
  8. Step 8: Divide, or compute the maximum price. Payback = (investment minus avoided investment) / yearly net value. Or: maximum price = avoided investment + years x yearly net value.

What does an avoided cabin or heavier connection add to the payback?

An avoided cabin or heavier connection is a one-off gain. For a heavy machine, it is often the largest number in the payback. A battery that supplies the machine above your connection can make that grid work unnecessary.

40,000 to 75,000 euroaverage cost of a medium voltage cabin, according to Inagro (2026)

Inagro, the agricultural research centre of West Flanders, says the price depends on the transformer, the cable length and the installation. Flemish farms can apply for 15% VLIF support for it. In Flanders, many buyers call it a high-voltage cabin, although it runs on medium voltage. Our article on a medium voltage cabin or a battery lists the Fluvius connection costs on top.

Our projects show the size of this stream. A dairy farm in Londerzeel avoided a medium voltage cabin: at least 60,000 euro saved from day one. A plant nursery in Jabbeke bought a new irrigation pump on a 32 A connection and got a proposal for medium voltage. With a semi off-grid system, it kept its street connection and now runs the pumps on 63 A.

A farm in Tielt would also have needed medium voltage to grow; the battery now adds the power. A flax processor in Wielsbeke avoided a large cabin with a generator and a battery.

A heavier low-voltage connection is a much smaller number. Fluvius charges 27.59 euro per kVA for extra power above 17.3 kVA, counted on the difference between the new and the old power. For a common step, from 22.2 to 55.4 kVA, Fluvius lists 1,429.70 euro excl. VAT, if the cable, the meter and the local grid are strong enough.

Between 25 and 250 kVA, Fluvius decides whether you stay on low voltage. In Wallonia, ORES charges only the extra power when you reinforce, unless the connection or the local grid falls short. From 25.1 to 55.4 kVA that is 6,187.93 euro excl. VAT. Our article on what a grid extension costs next to a battery compares these routes.

Two honest counter-lines. The wait has a price too: count the months your machine stands still, as explained in our article on what a delayed grid reinforcement costs. And a cabin also lowers your network cost per kWh. Inagro only sees that pay off from about 150,000 kWh a year, so add it as a minus line when you use that much.

How much is a lower peak worth in the payback of a battery?

In Flanders, every kW that a battery keeps off your monthly peak is worth 49.05 to 57.10 euro per year in 2026, excl. VAT, depending on your grid operator. Fluvius Imewo, for example, charges 54.20 euro. So 30 kW is worth about 1,600 euro a year.

That value is real, but it is rarely enough on its own. The peak only counts if the machine actually runs in the quarter-hour that sets your monthly peak. A pump that runs at night, when the rest of the site is quiet, may not raise your peak at all.

The capacity tariff uses the average of your monthly peaks over the last 12 months, with a minimum of 2.5 kW. Our article on how the capacity tariff is calculated walks through it with examples. On medium voltage you also pay for access power, which our article on sizing a peak shaving battery covers.

Watch out

These rates are Flemish. In Wallonia, a low-voltage connection up to 56 kVA pays no capacity term in 2026 to 2029, so the peak stream there is zero. In Brussels, low voltage up to 56 kVA pays a flat fee that does not follow your measured peak. Our article on grid tariffs for businesses in Wallonia and Brussels gives the rates above 56 kVA.

Worked example: the payback of a battery for a 30 kW pump or machine

In this worked example, a battery for a 30 kW machine may cost up to about 69,000 euro for a 7-year payback. That holds because it avoids a cabin. Every input is a public tariff or an assumption you replace with your own number.

Watch out

This is an illustrative example, not a customer case. We give no battery price: the investment is your variable. Replace every assumption with your own figures.

The site is a business or farm on low voltage, 3 x 400 V and 32 A (22.2 kVA), in the Fluvius Imewo area. It uses 60,000 kWh a year. A new 30 kW machine with a frequency drive runs about 4 hours on 250 working days: 30,000 kWh a year. The grid operator answers that it needs medium voltage.

The battery supplies the machine above the connection, so your peak and your connection stay as they are. It recharges from the solar panels by day and from the grid at night. How to size it is explained in our article on more power for a pump or machine without a heavier connection.

Now test a quote. Say a battery for this site costs 60,000 euro. Take off the 40,000 euro cabin you avoid: 20,000 euro is left. Divide by 4,201 euro a year: the payback is about 4.8 years. A quote of 90,000 euro gives 50,000 / 4,201, or about 12 years.

Three things this example leaves out on purpose. The battery ages, so its yearly value drops a little over time: keep a margin and never stretch the payback beyond the warranty. Trading income is not counted. And the Fluvius connection costs, inspections and waiting time of the cabin are not added, which makes the example conservative.

How much may a business battery cost to pay back in 7 years?

A business battery may cost at most the avoided investment plus 7 times its yearly net value to pay back in 7 years. In our example, that is about 69,000 euro with a cabin avoided, but only about 31,000 euro when a heavier connection would have done.

The heavier connection case uses the Fluvius step from 22.2 to 55.4 kVA: 1,430 + 7 x 4,201 = 30,837 euro. The peak only case has no connection problem and no solar surplus. The battery then charges all 30,000 kWh from the grid: 1,626 minus 750 of losses minus 500 = 376 euro a year. A battery that only shaves a peak on a small connection rarely pays back.

Use this price on every quote you get. The most important red flag is a payback figure that was calculated without your quarter-hour data. Our article on comparing business battery quotes lists the other points to check.

Tax can lower your net investment. In Flanders, a battery can qualify for the thematic investment deduction. The certificate requires a payback of at least 3 years, counting taxes and the deduction itself. Our article on subsidies and tax deductions for a business battery explains the rules; your accountant calculates the exact effect.

When does a business battery not pay back?

A business battery does not pay back when it has only one small job to do. These are the cases where we would advise against it, or would look at another solution first.

  • A small connection and only the peak to shave. As the example shows, a few hundred euro a year does not carry a battery.
  • The machine runs above the connection all day. The battery then has no time to recharge. Read our article on the start-up current of a heavy machine to see when a battery helps with the start only.
  • The peak happens outside the machine's hours. Then the battery saves nothing on the capacity tariff.
  • Wallonia, up to 56 kVA, and no solar surplus. There is no peak stream until 2029, so the case rests on an avoided connection.
  • The case only works with trading income. A battery that must keep capacity ready for your machine cannot also promise that income. Our article on batteries on the balancing market explains why.

Our verdict

A business battery for a heavy load pays back when it replaces grid work you would pay for anyway, and works daily on top. If your grid operator can give you a heavier low-voltage connection at a normal price, and your peak is small, take the connection.

What do we need from you to calculate your payback?

To calculate your payback, we need five things from you. With them, we size the battery on your real profile instead of on a rule of thumb.

The nameplate of the machine

Power, voltage and how it starts. A photo of the plate is enough.

A year of quarter-hour data

You download it from Mijn Fluvius. It shows your monthly peaks and when they happen.

The grid operator's answer

The quote for a heavier connection or a cabin, with the waiting time.

Your solar data

The monitoring of your panels, or the kWh you inject each month.

Your cost of downtime

What one hour without power costs you, if outages matter for your business.

Then we do the analysis and sizing, the technical design, the installation and commissioning, and the monitoring afterwards. Our business batteries range from SME systems to modular installations up to 1 MW. You get the numbers next to the grid operator's quote, so you can compare both routes.

Frequently asked questions

Is a battery storage system financially worthwhile for an SME in Belgium?

Yes, when it does at least two jobs, such as avoiding a heavier connection and storing solar power. A battery that only lowers a small peak rarely pays back. Use the method above with your own data before you decide.

Is an emergency power system for a business financially worthwhile?

Multiply the outage hours you expect per year by your cost per hour of downtime. A battery that also works every day pays for part of its back-up role. A system that only waits for an outage has to earn everything from those few hours.

Are 2.5 to 4 year payback claims real in Belgium?

They can be, when an avoided cabin or connection is part of the sum. The dairy farm in Lokeren paid back within 4 years for exactly that reason. Without it, ask for the data behind the claim.

What if energy prices fall: does a business battery still pay off?

The avoided investment and the capacity tariff do not depend on the price per kWh. Only the solar stream gets smaller when electricity becomes cheaper. A case built on the avoided grid work holds up best.

Does a business battery pay off in Wallonia without a capacity tariff?

Up to 56 kVA on low voltage, the peak stream is zero until 2029. The case then rests on the avoided connection, the solar power and the back-up. Above 56 kVA with peak metering, ORES and RESA do charge for the peak.

What are the hidden costs of a battery storage system for an SME?

In Flanders, you report the battery to Fluvius; systems above 25 kVA go through a grid study. Add the inspection of the installation, maintenance, monitoring, ageing and the space it needs. Our article on business battery safety covers fire safety and insurance.

How much does a battery for a heavy pump or machine cost in Belgium?

It is priced on the measured profile of your site, so we give no general price here. The method above tells you the most your case can carry. Leasing or financing spreads the cost, as our article on financing a business battery explains.
